Suburban Hospice Rated Top 5% in the Nation (Again!)

Here is part of our wonderful hospice team, gathered together for the first time after many weeks apart at an interdisciplinary team meeting on June 2, 2020.

Happy and heartfelt news from our Executive Director, Jeannie Crowe:

For the second year in a row, we have earned an award for our outstanding patient experience scores. Out of 2,000 hospices across the nation, we score in the top 5% for making our patients and families happy with our care.  These scores come from surveys that all hospices are required to provide. The survey is sent by an outside, objective organization and they collect the data and benchmark the results to the state and the nation. We have been through so many changes in the last year; a change in name and organizational structure, new service areas, adding new staff, it is good to know that the reputation of Hancock Regional Hospice continues with Suburban Hospice!

This distinction is especially meaningful to us because every single member of this team really wants to do their best work for each patient and family. The award is nice, but it is the very positive feedback the survey provides that keep us going when we get worried that what we do isn’t enough. Sometimes, the nurse or aide feels helpless to solve a problem or the chaplain or social worker worries that they are not truly providing comfort to families in crisis. Our hospice workers are people too, they get emotionally attached to patients and families and have to get accustomed to feeling the loss of those relationships when their work is done.  It helps to know that, even when we feel inadequate to the task, our families feel sincerely grateful to us. For those readers who are old enough to know that I am paraphrasing a quote by Sally Fields, its good to know that “You like us, you really like us!!”

Our mission to “alleviate suffering” guides the practice of our whole team, sometimes suffering is physical, sometimes it is emotional or spiritual, we want you to know that our mission is not just words, it is our daily guide. “Kindness, one person at a time” is not just a tagline, it is how we approach each patient, each spouse and each family member, every day, every time. We are honored and humbled to be entrusted with your care and your feelings at a very sacred time in a family’s life. Thank you for your confidence in us.
