Why hospice?
Happy National Hospice Month! As part of our celebration of hospice, members of our staff are sharing their hospice stories. You can hear why we love what we do:
“Why do I love hospice? I was in emergency medicine for over 20 years. I performed CPR on more people than I can remember to help prolong their lives. Out of all of those attempts, we were able to save perhaps only 20 percent of them, not really knowing what kind of life those patients would have afterwards.
End-of-life care is not easy. Death looks very different for everyone, so as a hospice nurse, I must be very compassionate and ready to serve each of my patients’ own needs and situations. My hospice patients no longer hope for a cure and know they are moving toward the end of the lives, but by having our hospice team with them through this part of their journey, they know they can continue spending quality time with their loved ones, end their life with dignity, all while being able to stay in the comfort of their own homes.
In the relatively short time I have been a hospice nurse, I have gotten the same amount of joy—if not more—from helping my patients through their end-of-life journey as I did helping that 20 percent prolong their lives in the ER.” – Bobbi, RN Case Manager
